About

Kabala Kitchen is owned and managed by Bristol-based chef Alice Kabala. After spending three years as kitchen manager and head chef at a highly acclaimed yoga teacher training and retreat centre, she launched Kabala Kitchen in 2016 with then business partner Richard George.

After a run of three successful pop-up supper clubs in the first half of 2017 (under previous business name ‘Planted’), they began street food trading in May 2017, appearing at various food markets, festivals and events.

Since 2017, Kabala Kitchen has traded regularly at a variety of markets such as Harbourside Market and Temple Quay Market, as well as catering for private events such as weddings, parties and wellness retreats.

Between March 2020-2022, they offered a regular Friday Doorstep Delivery service so customers could enjoy their signature comfort food in the comfort of their own home. In December 2022, KK took part in a two week restaurant residency at Kask Kitchen, serving an expanded menu to sit-in diners.

As of 2024, they are focusing on local street food markets, and can normally be found at Harbourside Market in the centre of Bristol.

Alice also offers catering for wellness retreats through sister company Thoughtful Forkfuls.

The Food

Our aim is to create dishes which are based on familiar, ‘comfort food’ classics, but with an innovative and healthy twist. We take inspiration from a variety of different cuisines, and offer a creative twist on favourites such as quesadillas, chilli dogs, ramen noodles, lasagne, enchiladas and more. We’ve done healthy tweaks and ingredient swaps throughout the cooking process to make our dishes more nutritious than their traditional counterparts. However, we focus on retaining that feeling of indulgence that we personally love so much about comfort food.

Almost every element of our food is handmade from scratch in our little kitchen in Ashton, Bristol. Some of the suppliers we source our ingredients from include:

We’re proud Crumbs Finalists, being selected as a nominee in the ‘Roaming Kitchens’ category at the 2019 Crumbs awards.

We have a 5* Food Hygiene Rating. Most recent inspection: July 2022

Sustainability

Sustainability is important to us and at the core of what we do:

  • As our menu is 100% plant-based, it uses much fewer of our planet’s finite resources to produce.

  • We seek out local suppliers for our produce, and design our menu around seasonal ingredients to further lower our carbon and water footprint.

  • All of our disposables are recyclable or commercially compostable (never plastic), and on our street food stand we encourage consumers to bring their own reusable container.

  • Almost 100% of our vegetables and herbs are grown organically, as well as an ever-increasing range of our grains, pulses and spices. Many of our vegetables are grown in our own garden using a no-dig approach, to keep the soil healthy!

  • All of our vegetable peelings are composted in our own garden, our cooked food waste is taken away to be anaerobically digested, and all of our other waste is properly sorted and recycled to ensure as little as possible ends up in landfill.

We’ve been recognised for our committments in this area by being awarded a a GOLD ‘Bristol Eating Better’ award, achieving 97% of the required actions to ensure that we offer healthy food options, and promote sustainability within the business.
